Ballhawks

Great Documentary with Bill Murray narrating
Loved this independent gem with long time Cub fan Bill Murray as the narrator that chronicles the plight of the Ballhawks outside of Wrigley Field in Chicago. This is a sports based film but not the type of movie that you have to be a jock to enjoy. It's about people, relationships and doing what you want with your life. I loved the characters in the film and there's also well though out, comedic counterpoint from local ESPN radio jock Harry Tenowitz. Well worth the time and money. See it.

Koi and the Kola Nuts, Told by Whoopi Goldberg with Music by Herbie Hancock

Another adventure to share . . .
Whoopi Goldberg was the perfect choice to narrate this tale. Young Koi seeks adventure with just Kola nuts. Each animal he meets needs a few nuts for various reasons. He is rewarded for his kindness by each of the creature. Yes, once again my grandchildren and I enjoy another adventure . . . one not familiar to them. The artistic drawings and music accompany the narration to give us another fun video. Just for fun? Add this to a collection that encompasses many different cultures . . . Enjoy!

Folk tale
A simple story of how helping others helped Koi in life. The illustrations are likable with its 3D layer feel.

John Henry, Told by Denzel Washington with Music by B.B. King

John Henry DVD
Kids love this lively tale of one of America's African-American pioneers. In a time when reading and math overshadow history, this story segues into a discussion of the opening of the American West. It's funny, entertaining, and a great way to introduce tall tales to kids.

Excellent
An age old story told by an academy award winning actor and music by a grammy winning musician. Superb. Superior Quality.

Great tall tale
Good for classroom use; this is a short but well done video with great narration by Denzel Washington. I would view it again.

The Angels Take Manhattan

Needed a few tissues for this one
I will say this for BBC's reboot of Doctor Who -- the show does both its Hello's and its Goodbyes very well. It will be difficult to write much in this review without offering spoilers. I really, really enjoyed this episode. It kept me guessing. It had Moffat's usual riddles and it had the depth of emotional drama one saw in the best of Russell T. Davies' episodes. I've been missing the old romance and panache of Amy & Rory's relationship for the past few episodes, and this episode brought it back in a huge way. Some depth added to the relationship between River Song and the Doctor, as well.

My favorite line from the episode:

"We're changing the future. It's called marriage."

God, that hit home. As both a married man and as a viewer who has really invested in Amy and Rory, this one hit home.

What else to say? The Weeping Angels were back. They weren't quite as chilling as in "Blink," but there were several intense moments that recalled that...

The Question That Must Never Be Answered
For the dedicated Doctor Who fan, it isn't a matter of whether this is less or more than "Blink". The deliciousness lies in this season's beginning ending with "The Question That Must Never Be Answered" - just a sly HINT of where we're going on this year's roller coaster ride with the Doctor. And WHO is there among us who could POSSIBLY resist that?!?

The story is amazing. Touching. Human. And humane. "Subtract love, add hate." That is the formula that makes a monster of any human. How strong must be the love that keeps us human in the face of our worst fears!

"Asylum of the Daleks" is a GEM - one of the greatest "Who's". EVER.

Loved it.
I have it very very rough these days. There aren't a lot of things for me to look forward to anymore. But I can look forward to Doctor Who.

The New Adventures of Peter Rabbit

Nothing whatsoever to do with the Easter Bunny!
I believe that the reviews associated with this listing are for Here Comes Peter Cottontail, not this animation. This DVD is an animated cartoon about a bunny named Peter who is given the responsibility by the mother rabbit to watch his four sisters. Peter disregards every instruction his mother gives him and gets into a lot of trouble. This movie has absolutely NOTHING to do with the Easter Bunny. I feel that the title of this DVD is extremely misleading and the only reason I bought it was because of the supposed Easter theme. This being said, my 2 and 4 year old girls loved hopping around the room as they watched this cartoon.

Misleading title, but good show
I do have to agree with other reviewers about the title. My husband and I picked this up for our son, almost two, for his Easter basket. It really has nothing to do with Easter, though. My son adores it and watches it every chance he gets. I like all of the classical music they play in the background. Even though it isn't Easter, it still is a lot better than some things he could be watching, and it isn't overly irritating for adults.

Wrong Description!
The editorial review of this DVD is the wrong one. It applies to "Here Comes Peter Cottontail" and not this title! I purchased this, remembering "Irontail" from my youth. However, "Irontail" does not appear in this DVD. It is a cartoon and not claymation. The cartoon is fine for small tykes but make sure you are ordering the correct title!

Treasure Island

Entertaining animated version of classic
This DVD is a full length animated feature, very fun for kids, suitable for age 6 and up. Unlike alot of what is out there, this one is very good. It has been shown on Nickelodeon and you may have seen it there. It was first released on DVD in 2002. The story is based on the classic Robert Luis Stevenson tale of the same name. A young man meets Captain Long John Silver, and the adventure of a lifetime begins. Sailing ships, pirates, swordplay, buried treasure, it's all here. I thought it was an enjoyable afternoon of viewing with my son.
The Video from DIC Entertainment is of a movie produced in 2002, with very modern animation, it was animated by the Hong Ying Universe Company for DIC.
This movie is one of those that parents or babysitting teens will not mind watching too. It is 74 minutes long. The animation is fluid, the voice actors are good. Nice animated effects. Extras include bloopers, a behind the scenes show, and fun facts with Inspector Gadget. The same...

An entertaining animated adventure
This animated version of the classic boys' adventure story written by Robert Louis Stevenson is actually a re-release of a 1971 Australian production. While the animation itself is subpar compared to today's standards, it's average for the day. The voice work, which to my surprise included Hugh Keays-Byrne (Mad Max, Moby Dick), is pretty good. Pretty faithful to the original text, though a bit fast paced, this cartoon is suited for audiences of all ages (though primarily young children).

Hunchback of Notre Dame

Not one of their best, but good songs make it an enjoyable film!
Jetlag Productions' 1996 animated film, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, is yet another title in the large line of Goodtimes Entertainment's children animated outputs. I'll make it clear right now that this is not Disney's animated feature released the same year, so don't think you'll be getting a Disney product, quality or no quality, for such a low price as this. Instead of wasting time making detailed comparisons between Disney's film and Jetlag's, I'll review this film based on its own merits and ignore any different adaptations of this story. To be frank, The Hunchback of Notre Dame was not Jetlag Productions' finest hour, perhaps this adult story was simply not intended to become a children's film in any way. Like most animated films from the studio, The Hunchback of Notre Dame has its good points and its bad points.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame was inspired by Victor Hugo's timeless novel, "Notre Dame de Paris", and tells the story of a misshapen young man named...

Hiking the Grand Canyon - The Corridor Trails

Valuable Hiking Information, Background, and Memories
The footage in this video covers more beautiful scenes from the Grand Canyon than all but a handful of people on earth will ever see. In addition, you get valuable geological and topographical information that will make your hike more interesting and memorable. Having this video also saves you the trouble of shooting your own footage (and carrying your own video equipment). Finally, the hiking information is relevant to preparing to make your hiking at the Grand Canyon exactly what you want it to be.

If you are like most people (99 percent of them anyway), you will come to the Grand Canyon, ooh and aah a little from the rim, and go to the next place on your trip. This video will give you many of the views that can only be seen by hiking down. So you can get a lot of benefit from very little effort. That's a very good deal.

Before going on, I want to also praise this video for choosing to cover all three main trails to the Colorado River from the north and south rims. Even...

The all time #1 Grand Canyon Hiking Video
I like the author of this video hiked through the GC for the first time in 1993 and was hooked. I have returned many times since always finding something new just below the rim. I can say easily that the canyon changed my life and my view of the world around me. This video comes the closest to showing to the world that world below the rim that hikers find. I think that anyone who is interested in hiking there should definitely see this video. It gives the most information on geology and trail conditions I have seen in any video (even the one from the backcountry office). I give this video the highest rating because I believe from my own experience that it deserves it!

A Valuable Hiking Assest
Hiking the Grand Canyon is not only an assest but a necessity for anyone drawn to the beauty and mystery of this natural wonder. It is obvious from the presentation that much time and thought went into creating such a practical guide. Detailed computer graphics, picturesque video, and a superbly performed voice-over of all information make this video as enjoyable as it is useful. Five stars! Here's hoping the creators will search out other US trails and parks to present to the populace. As an east-coaster, I'd like to suggest the Appalachian Trail.

My Three and Five Years Old Love this Movie
My three year old daughter and five year old son enjoy watching this movie. It is beautiful, and it is worth buying. And a bit of history cannot hurt.

I like this movie!!!
I really like this movie because of the singing and all the humor. Bartok is my favorite character because he is hilarious!! This movie is cool cause like when you are babysitting, you can watch a movie that you and the kids'll like! Also, if you are into historical movies with cartoons, (are there anymore??) you'll like this one!!

The Worst Movie Ever Made!
Unfortunately, the rating system does not allow for negative stars, or I would give this movie a negative 10. It's worse than Fresh Horses (with Andrew McCarthy and Molly Ringwald), and worse than the worst Kevin Costner movie I've seen (some beach farce shown on late night TV). The songs are terrible, the overt Bolshevik propaganda is nauseating, and some of the scenes are just plain stupid. I thought maybe the people who made this movie were laughing about how they made such an awful movie and people were actually watching it, but my greatest fear is that they actually weren't.

This version of the Prince and the Pauper is fun for little children but deviates enough from the tale to be just plain silly. I was not a fan of the talking shoes and any things were unclear (chiefy the relationship between the King and Tom) and hoe Edward (the prince) gets back home).

Only show to kindergarten or younger, not useful if you're a teacher for 6th grade.

Children Of The Corn IV: The Gathering

Not the best one... but close
... Not many of them are scary. I will admit though the first texas chainsaw massacre did. Recently ive been watching the COTC series(an exausting 7) and it seems the more they make the less of a story we get. It went from not many killings and a good story(COTC 1) to basically no story and alot of blood, killing, and horribly effected creatures(COTC 3)but i will say that of the series, 4 is definitly one of the best. Yeah there is a lot of killing, blood, and some baaaaad acting(the black girl who dies) but it actually has a story to it.. Honestly im not lieing. the story doesnt really get told till toward the end but the story is actually good and seems like it took more than 5 min to come up with. It starts with a mother who has 2 children living with her. she is suffering from bad dreams where children attack and kill her. They scare her so bad taht she is even afraid to leave the front yard. When her other daughter heres she is getting worse she decides to stop in for a visit to...

I LIKED THIS MOVIE AIOT.ALL OF THE TOWNS KIDS ARE GETTING FEVERS.ANDTHEN ALL OF THE KIDS RESURECT THIS DEAD KID WITH THIER BLOOD.

Back to the cornfields
No other author in recent memory has had as much consistent success selling books as Stephen King. For roughly three decades the Maine writer churned out book after book, each one selling more and more copies. He's a world unto himself, the lucky fellow! He's so successful that he could throw out his pens, put away his typewriters, bury his word processor six feet under, never write another word in his life, and STILL have enough money to wallpaper the Great Wall of China five times over. In many respects, it's Stephen King's world and the rest of us are just living in it. But, and this is a gigantic but, an enormous number of metaphysically bad films based on his novels threaten to put a serious dent in his legacy. We all know the good ones, the ones that not only scared audiences stiff but also helped propel King's career to even greater heights. "Carrie" is probably the best example, followed by "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Dead Zone." These are wonderful, magical films that...

Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth

Hellraiser III on DVD Finally!
First, the DVD, it's not the greatest in the world, No Dolby 5.1 Surround, not letterboxed, but nice to complete the series on DVD at last. This is technically the unrated version of the film, 2 added minutes, which is mostly extended gore...Great stuff! There are NO extras either, oh well. It's available, I guess that's what counts and as originally a Paramount Pictures release I wouldn't look for a Collector's Edition any time soon. As for the movie itself, I loved it. With the introduction of new Cenobites, CD head the coolest of them all, gave us a fresh perspective of Pinhead's abilities to replace his former troup. Unfortunately they didn't give his new cohorts a lot time to explore. Pinhead does get more screen time (unlike Hellraiser Inferno) and finally Doug Bradley (not Doug Stewart as mentioned in another review) gets screen time without makeup, gives us a broader view of his backstory and how he became this monstrosity. ("Bloodline" gives us the Lament...

And now for the let down...
NO extended or deleted scenes. The film IS anamorphic widescreen, but it fails to mention it on the dvd case--it simply says it's "letterboxed". It's Dolby 2.0 sound with some rear speaker ambience. There's a "Clive Barker The Art of Horror" featurette that runs a half-hour and is an old, dated documentary. The picture looks better than on any of the previous bogus releases, but it hasn't been through any kind of restoration, so the print itself has plenty of wear and tear. Oh well. At least we can rejoice that it's an official widescreen release to include with the rest of the series on our shelves.

Decent entry in the Hellraiser saga, which is getting a re-release in August.
Anyone looking to get this movie should know that a real RE-release of it is planned for August OF 2006, by Paramount Pictures. The re-relese will include a new Anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby 5.1 sound, along with a few extras.

This is a decent entry in the Hellraiser saga, and the frist time that this particular chapter is getting a real release. I would suggest anyone wanting this move to wait untill August and by it from Amazon then.

Saw VII The Final Chapter

There Will Be Pink Blood
I'll keep this review simple, since it is after all the seventh film in the SAW series. Since 2004, I've made the trek to my local theater to see what Jigsaw had in store, but it's become more of a chore with each passing year. The first three movies were the best, but these last two are worthy sequels. I didn't care much for IV or V. The acting this time around is okay and story doesn't lag too much, but I have to say that the traps and gore level is probably the highest of all the films. If only the blood didn't look so cheap, with a noticeable pinkish hue, I think I would have had a harder time not turning away from the carnage. There are a couple of twists that I won't spoil, but the major one was predicted more than a few movies ago by most SAW fans. Still, it is pretty neat and will hopefully wrap up these movies for good.

The 3-D wasn't really needed, but it did have a couple of body parts flying through the air moments to shine.

Trap heavy, but a weak conclusion to a seven year franchise
None of the Saw films have been able to capture the same atmosphere or effectiveness of the original film. The sequels weren't able to screw with your head or have a twist that was quite as big as the one in the 2004 film. Most of the sequels had a budget of around $10 million, but went on to gross over $50 million at the box office. It's no wonder that Jigsaw is the new face of horror and the Saw films are being called the modern version of Friday the 13th since the sequels hit every year around Halloween like clockwork. So now, here we are, the "final" installment in the franchise and it's being presented in 3-D. Unfortunately, Saw 3D leaves a lot to be desired.

The film honestly felt like it was just trap after trap after trap until we reached the finale. The traps were bigger and sure, they looked pretty great in 3-D, but they were happening to new characters; characters we didn't know or care about. It seemed like they tried to cram as many traps they could into an...

It should have been amazing.
In the seventh go around, the 3D gimmick is employed to make the crazy traps come alive. And being the seventh entry, it's only natural that this Saw is in need of a good sharpening.

I've seen every film in this series, and this one falls somewhere in the middle as far as plot, quality, and creativity go. The movie is being advertised as the final Saw, and I hope that's true. I have always been intrigued by the overall premise - which isn't just to slice and dice innocent victims like so much of the "torture porn" does nowadays. These movies take moral and ethical dilemmas, and turn them into inventive life or death games. This seventh film lost a lot of the originality and the traps seemed quite repetitive, while many of the deaths were not justifiable in the realm of the Saw logic. Here the filmmakers just decided to splatter as much blood on their 3D audience for sheer shock value - and that is not something I am a fan of.

I will say, without spoiling the...

Hellraiser V: Inferno

It's a Wonderful Death.
Jaw-droppingly good in comparison to every film to come since the original HELLRAISER, it was with great trepidation that I dropped this one into the DVD player. Just having suffered through Part 4: BLOODLINE a few weeks back, my expectations for INFERNO were about as low as they could be.

An inspired, twisted take on films like IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, HELLRAISER: INFERNO brings quality back to the franchise. It also brings decent acting, impressive direction, great effects, and, believe it or not, genuine chills and scares. Consistently maintaining the sense of dread created in films like JACOB'S LADDER or LOST HIGHWAY, INFERNO abandons previous sequels' use of Pinhead as little more than a soundbite-spouting slasher and focuses on the sins of man, in particular a dirty detective impressively played by Craig Sheffer. Fear not, fans - there are cenobites a'plenty, and they're far scarier than any of the sad, sad jokes found in Parts 3 or 4. Director Scott Derrickson wisely follows...

Good horror thriller
After having watched all four Hellraiser movies, I think Hellraiser Inferno is completely different. Well, I have got the feeling that a lot of true Hellraiser fans won't like this chapter. The protagonist of this movie isn't very sympathic and friendly: he takes drugs, sleeps with hookers(even though he has got a beautiful wife) and denounces his partner at the police station. A lot of people will despise this character and turn off the tv. However I stayed with this broken character and it is quite interesting to see how he unleashes the horrors of the box. His evil character traits are essential for the end of movie. Another flaw is that Pinhead only appears for two or three minutes on the screen. Nonetheless the movie deals with the desperate search of the protagonist for a mysterious person called the Engineer, who is connected with the box. If you accept the fact that this Hellraiser movie is completely different from the other parts, you'll enjoy a great and dark horror...

Hercule Pinhead
If you pay close attention, you'll notice that the opening credits of HELLRAISER: INFERNO are missing the words "Clive Barker." In its place are a couple guys whose last names are Weinstein. That's a clue right there: this movie isn't interested in building on the Hellraiser mythos.

It IS interested in clues, though. Craig Sheffer (of One Tree Hill) narrates the film as Detective Joseph Thorne. Joe is a good cop ("I'm good with puzzles" he growls) but not a good man. He wishes he was good, but can't be bothered to do much more than wish. Not until people he knows start dying.

Along for the ride is Joe's hapless partner, Detective Nenonen (played by John Turturro's youngest brother, Nick). Together the two stumble onto a case involving sadistic deaths, a strange puzzle box, and a criminal mastermind known only as...

Hellrasier VIII: Hellworld

Good movie, but not a real sequel to the Hellraiser franchise
Overall, the movie was okay. The plot revolves around a group of friends that have a common obsession, and that is the Hellworld online game, based on, of course, the Hellraiser movies. They go their separate ways after one of their friends dies as a result of his addiction to the game. Flash forward, and the friends are reunited at a party with the theme of "Hellworld", and all hell breaks loose, kind of.

Aside from the last five minutes of the film, this could have been based off a multitude of different backdrops other than Hellraiser, and still been a good movie. This is just another attempt to profit off of the original two movies. The credits should not have read "Starring Doug Bradley", but should have said "Featuring a very brief appearance by Doug Bradley" (he must be charging a budget breaking amount per minute, because his cameos keep on getting briefer and briefer).

See it because it is a decent horror flick, but don't expect a Hellraiser sequel,...

Children Of The Corn: Revelation

It was an end
The people who gave this movie such bad reviews obviously didn't watch it or didn't pay attention to what they were watching. This movie with the title of Revelation was just that for the series. It is a kind of ending which explains where the "child cult" got started. Many of the kids did not have names that is true but the important ones did. This movie went a step beyond the other movies, it takes you back to where it all started and just may be the end of it all. I enjoyed this movie a lot, from the silent scenes full of suspence to the loud scenes full of screaming and children's laughter. If you aren't into this series and haven't watched them and payed attention you will find it to make no sense, but if you have then it will all make perfect sense and you will be glad you watched it.

A good sequel!
BACK OF THE BOX:
Based on the chilling story, 'Children of the Corn' by Stephen king, REVELATION is the next shocking chapter in this ever-poplar series of sspence-thrillers! When calls to her eccentric grandmonther go unanwered, Jamie Lowell is shocked to discover that her grandmother's last known adress is a condemned tenement building overrunned by ncontrolled children! But as Jamie slowly uncovers the truth behind her grandmother's mysterios dissapearance, she merely disturbs a powerful evil that now wishes to destroy Jamie as well!

When I saw this movie for $4.00 on VHS at my local thrift store, I took it home and expected the worst. I popped in the tape and was amazed. This sequel had almost nothing to do with the original, bt it was a great film! The special effects cold have been a bit better, but it is still a good movie! But only rent or buy it if you are a DIE-HARD COTC fan!

I kinda liked this one
After totally going to hell with 5 and the very slight redemption of 6 things kinda get back on track with the CotC series. That said, this film is thoroughly mediocre, but, again, after those last two flicks mediocre is looking pretty good. The plot is your standard CotC rehash, and it is way light on the gore, not that most of these films were usually very gory, but it's a more involving and generally quite nice looking film. Unlike in the previous two entries, one gets the impression that the director actually cared about the film, and tried to make it be good. This films is probably the slickest, sharpest film in the series, and it has some nice creepy looking locales and a lot of fine atmospheric lighting. Quite a bit of colored lighting too, one gets the impression that the director may be an Argento or Bava fan. (Note the pulsing green light, in particular. Very Argento-esque.) Still, after a relatively effective buildup the ending is more anemic than usual. Again,...

Hellraiser VII: Deader

This re-release is in fullscreen, 1.33:1 & devoid of extras...
...but the bargain price was right up my alley to see these later Hellraiser films for the 1st time. I only owned the 1st 3 on DVD and saw Hellraiser IV: Bloodline back in the 90's, a title I was initially disappointed with back then but have more appreciation for now despite being not as good as the classic earlier films.

The fullscreen presentation right off the bat cuts off the beginning credits as all the names of the stars & crew get cut off at the sides, such as star of the film "Kari Wu"! She's not even Asian. The sound quality is a bit lacking also as some dialogue is hard to understand versus the music, and there are NO subtitles or closed captioning. No anything on the menu screen except "Play" and "Scene selection".

The previous release of Deader on DVD according to Amazon's page is 1.85:1 widescreen, but I don't own that disc but those out there may want that version if bothered by the boxiness of this newer disc.

not your normal hook and chain
We've all gotten use to the cult classic masterpiece that we know as Hellraiser. Our beloved Pinhead, the beautiful and mysterious puzzle box that gets the ball rolling, and Kirstie Cotton's character going head to head with one of our favorite movie monsters. This story takes a slightly different angle, as does "Inferno" and "Hellseeker" even though one of our favorite heroins reprises her role from the first two films in "Hellseeker". It does get confusing at times but if you pay attention and stick with it, its worth it. The story takes on the journey of others who have the misfortune of crossing paths with the beautiful and mysterious puzzle box that unleashes utter chaos on those who are stupid enough to open it cause it's pretty. The story was interesting and well played and the actors were very good. It pleases me to say how much I enjoyed this movie. It's not our traditional Hellraiser tale but it kinda puts Pinhead's role more in perspective and reveals a little more to...

Hellraiser: Deader
I think if Hollywood were to take anything away from the Hellraiser franchise it would be this: quit being such cheap bstrds out to save a little cash and spring for an original friggin' script! HELLRAISER 7, aka HELLRAISER: Deader (2005) is just yet another in a long line (the third so far) of Hellraiser movies that began life as entirely separate entities. Neither HELLRAISER: Inferno, HELLRAISER: Hellseeker nor HELLRAISER: Deader were written as Hellraiser movies, but Dimension films decided they wanted to make more Hellraiser movies and, to not have to pay for a new, original script, they took some old unproduced scripts off the shelf, did some re-writes to include the Lament Configuration and the Cenobites, and they made their movie. And with each one, they just drive the franchise further and further into the ground. Gone is the once-great mythology, gone is the feeling of menace the Cenobites once inspired, and definitely gone is any of the heart Clive Barker put into his...

Nicely done send-up of 1950s-era Sci-Fi
OK, just so you know, I'm a HUGE fan of both 1950s science-fiction movies, as well as modern-day "homages" or parodies. Also a big fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000; so when I saw the listing for Atomic Brain Invasion, (and subsequently checked out the trailer on YouTube) I got pretty darn excited - it's exactly what it appears to be - a low-budget, but surprisingly well-produced take on those wonderful films of the Fifties. Starting off with a hammy introduction (a la "Plan 9 From Outer Space [Blu-ray]") by an earnest, redundant "scientist" on grainy black and white film, the movie switches to color, and introduces us to all the stock players who populate these kinds of films: the nerdy, intelligent kid; the girl who secretly loves him; the bully/jock (who harbors his own secret passion), the clueless townsfolk, and the HOO-RAH Army General, all of whose lives are altered forever when not one, but TWO alien...

Wind Chill

"Chill Factor," "Every Breath You Take"/ Or Another 'Nightmare Before Christmas'
(3 1/2 *'s) George Clooney and Stephen Soderbergh have teamed up once again to produce `Wind Chill,' a horror movie that's more and less than one expects from a horror film. First of all, it's equally a survivor story and a stalker/romance as well as ghost story with a colorful history. Don't get me wrong, there are some scary moments in the movie, but the film admirably relies more on suspense and ambiguity in its presentation. All of it comes together in a way that's as invigorating as a cold, arctic blast from Canada.

The movie starts with some familiar on-the-road setup, complete with the car that breaks down and everything goes wrong. From there the developments are often different, however. Mysterious without names, the "Gal" (Emily Blunt) foregoes the plane ride from college exams before holiday break and decides to take the Greyhound bus. That is until she gets a text message during an exam inviting her to hook up with a ride from the posted message board...

"Wind Chill" is bone-chilling!!!
My spotlight reviewer buddy, JP, got me interested in this film and all I can say is thanks for the night of no sleep, JP! :>)

I'm going to keep this review short as JP's Picks, a current Spotlight Review, really got all the details dead on (I couldn't resist the pun), and today I am enjoying my 22nd anniversary with my wife; however, I have a little time here to write this review about this wickedly intense little chiller that is low on gore, sex and violence and high on chills, storyline, and character development. Of course, this may explain the love it or hate reviews you see posted. I'm okay with that as this kind of chiller really isn't for everyone tastes and many small films are like that as they are targeted at a specific audience.

I found the performances by the two leads to be exceptionally believable and layered. Emily Blount is a real standout in her role as "the girl" simply trying to get home from college by bumming a ride off a "guy" (no names...

Don't let the cheesy cover fool you, give it a chance
To be honest, the cover of the movie alone would cause me not to see it. I even avoid the genre of low budget 'horror' b-movies altogether. So why did I see it? Emily Blunt. And I couldn't be happier about givng this movie a chance.

The movie does lack on the horror side of the story, with not much originality. And the movie isn't really all that scary, but it's not trying to be, and I think them not trying so hard is why this move is so good. They rely on acting and character development, with a good romance development, and anything scary that happens is only a means to develope the relationship between these characters.

Expertly acted and directed, it would be a shame if you passed this small gem up for the reasons I almost did. And I can assure you that you would enjoy it even if you don't know, or care, who Emily Blunt is.

Denying the Moon Landings [HD]

WARNING!!!! EPISODES ARE OUT OF ORDER
I wanted to see "Space: Bots or Bodies" listed as episode 4 so I bought it. But I got instead the episode "Click" about the Smithsonian photo contest. I thought it was just a long trailer on the front of the one I bought but it wasn't. I stopped and from the episode 4 menu screen I played the episode 4 "trailer" and got a few seconds from the middle of the trailer for episode 7 "Museum in the Making". Ok... so I just blew 3 bucks, knowing Amazon is not too quick for or even likely to refund instant video purchases (and because I had just been happy to have watched Cleopatra for "free" thanks to Prime) I accepted the loss and went with caution through the rest of the episode trailers hoping that two Amazon errors on one episode page of a season might be a fluke.

Luckily the trailers of the other pages that I tried matched the episodes BUT none of the pages match the actual video episodes. The whole season is all out of order. Buyer be-very-ware!

Buried

Forget thinking outside the box
You wouldn't figure a movie that spends the entire 90 minutes stuck inside a coffin with just a single actor could be anything but boring, but thanks to a real revelation of a performance from Ryan Reynolds, Buried defies the odds. The premise is simple. A civilian truck driver in Iraq wakes up and finds himself buried alive. Because it's shot in real time, every suffocating minute he fights through, we also share in the agony. I must warn you that patience is required. The movie moves along at a decent pace and there is plenty of suspense, but we as the audience experience nothing other than what this unfortunate character is going through. This includes a couple of minutes along the way of staring at a black screen as his various lights go out. Don't worry too much though, because he has a zippo, flashlight, two glow sticks and the faint light from a cell phone to help us see what is going on. The phone also come in handy for dialogue purposes. Why does he have all of these things...

Up Close and Personal...
I bought this movie. I'm always looking for different ways of telling a story. This was excellent storytelling. Now I'm extremely claustrophobic. It's difficult getting me inside of an elevator. So everytime there was a shot of this enclosed space, I found myself hyper-ventilating. It's not shot in the 'first person' but still you have no one but the Paul Conroy character to identify with. You begin to see, feel, hear and experience his situation along with him. His sense of helplessness, growing fear and panic is yours as well. I am not a 'spoiler' so this review will be brief. Suffice it to say it was not a waste of money. Kept me enthralled and left me weary and weepy (is that a word?) to the end. Gave me a lot to think about and not easy to shake off. I highly recommend this movie to those who are looking for more entertaining, cerebral cinema viewing. Just my 3cents.

Gripping Thriller
A man wakes up to find himself in the dark, trapped in a small space like a coffin. All he can find is a lighter and a cell phone. And the cell phone's battery is running very low and is likely to be out of power at any moment. Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds) is the man, an American truck river who is literally buried alive. In this riveting thriller Paul tries to figure out how to contact the right person to get a help before it is too late.

The thrilling film is an admirable feat on the part of the scriptwriter Chris Sparling and the director Rodrigo Cortés. They refuse to rely on familiar narrative devices such as flashbacks, making the viewers share the same claustrophobic experiences of being trapped in a wooden box. It is like reading an Edgar Allan Poe short story, a well-told tale of terror that grabs your attention instantly and never lets go.

But the real star of the suspenseful film is of course Ryan Reynolds as the buried man. Unique as it is, the...

Several Leagues Below the Sea / Cammie Island

Bad release of a terrific show
I know some people don't like these "reviews" where the person isn't actually reviewing the product, but this needs to be said. This release is weak, and it's what Warner Bros. seems to do best. This is my favorite new cartoon, and the episodes featured here are good. I don't own this release, but I don't have to to tell you it's a waste. This show deserves a season set, but instead we get this feeble, single disc release. There are a lot of good Cartoon Network shows that have not been released properly. Where is Dexter's Lab, Courage the Cowardly Dog, or Cow and Chicken? The only one that was given a good treatment was Powerpuff Girls. That came out as a complete series set, only after several single disc volumes and a first season set. Warner Bros. is the owner of a lot of good properties, which is lucky for them. It's unlucky for us, though, because they cannot seem to grasp the concept of giving the fans what they want. If Warner Bros. wants to be uptight about this kind of...

The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, Vol. One
Out of several cartoon shows that appear on Cartoon Network, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack stands out. It is very unique and entertaining, just like Chowder.

The main characters of the show is a young adventure seeking and candy loving boy named Flapjack, and his maple syrup drinking pirate buddy Captain K'nuckles. Also we have the always protective and loving whale, Bubbie, who raised Flapjack since he was an infant.

The series follows the trio as they partake on adventures on Stormalong Harbor and beyond. Always seeking a way to get to Candied Island, or at least getting some free candy from Peppermint Larry.

The show has a great deal of entertainment value, but some may disagree with me. But all of us are entitled to our own opinion. Personally, I really like the show and its unique characters. The animation is different, plus like Chowder, it utilizes stop-motion animation!

Below is a list of episodes and special features that...

Simply Marvelous
My boyfriend and I watch the Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack every chance I get. We are 28 and 27 years old. Flapjack is hilarious and always puts us in a great mood. It's good, clean, silly fun...for the young AND the old! The puns are chuckle-worthy and the storylines, as crazy as they may be, leave you wanting more. If I were to compare Flapjack to any other cartoon, I would have to say it reminds me of the ever legendary Ren & Stimpy and/or Spongebob Squarepants. Whether you're in the mood for a haircut or surgery, or in desperate need for a maple syrup fix, Flapjack is the show to watch. I have been waiting for this DVD to come out for what seems like FOREVER. I plan on buying it as soon as it's released. May the spine-tickling entertainment of Flapjack live on for eternities to come!

P.S. Remember...Everything's comatose roses. ... Hahahahahahaa

Phunny Business

The Best Documentary of the Decade
The story depicted here is so well told. I wish any of the gazillion network will run it more often. Raymond Lambert is an absolute genuis. This is one of the best productions I have ever seen...period. The story, without giving anything away, discusses Mr. Lambert's rise to fame and in so doing helped 90% of the best comedians of our time. This story makes you laugh and cry. Clearly, Mr. Lambert will go on. From the ashes rises a strong man who is fighting his way back. Thanks for getting this DVD out.

COMEDY IS A FUNNY BUSINESS
This is a documentary about the club "All Jokes Aside" which operated in south Chicago from 1991-2000. The film starts with the owners who had MBAs in business and their desire to operate a classy African-American comedy club. The documentary includes stories about the staff, house MC, operation, and the comedians. The credits list Dave Chappelle and Bernie Mac in the credits, but Steve Harvey appears far more than they do.

There are bits and pieces of the comedians' acts, but it is not a comedy tape per se where we get to see entire acts. The film is funny at times, but more documentary than a comedy.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, N-word.

Super interesting
If you are a comedy club fan and/or from Chicago I highly recommend watching this. It was available on Showtime but I didn't see it there so I had to buy the DVD. It's really interesting and fun to watch.

Dark Shadows (+Ultraviolet Digital Copy Combo Pack) [Blu-ray]

Something of a surprise
I had two big surprises when I started watching Dark Shadows. First: the trailer was very misleading. The trailers made this film look as if it was going to be a complete comedy. Much to my delight, the film was actually a lot darker than I thought it would be. While I have no problem with comedies, I felt that making this a completely comedic film would not do justice to the original Dark Shadows TV show, in which the comedic elements were not its main draw.

The second surprise for me was that this felt like an older Tim Burton film. Now when I say that, I mean it feels like a return to his more macabre films than his recent output. Burton has always been at his best in my mind when dealing with horror elements, such as Sleepy Hollow or even Ed Wood. He draws on classic horror films and plays with their tropes. He hasn't been doing this as much recently with the exception of Sweeney Todd. Other than that he's been doing more family friendly films (Charlie and the Chocolate...

Anybody for Shadows that are Funny, Quirky yet DARK??? ****Spoiler Alert****
I really look forward to the Blu-Ray Release of Burton's Dark Shadows as it sounds like there are nine additional segments to the movie that can be watched individually or as part of an expanded feature film...if I understand correctly. For sure there is a fairly fast, fun paced DARK yet FUNNY movie.

To begin with...if you are a traditional vampire purist...you WILL be aggravated that Barnabas never encounters a Crucifix, never disappears on demand or turns into a bat nor is required to sleep in his coffin by day.

The Burton "take" on the Collins family (and employees) yields Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, her brother Roger Collins, her daughter Carolyn, his son David, Dr Julia Hoffman, Willie Loomis, Sarah Johnson and of course Barnabas Collins. "Victoria Winters" and Angelique Bouchard round out the main cast.

The flick is a nice tight jaunt of around 113 minutes and is very well paced. Most of the material seen on the movie trailers are quickly whisked...

Torture
I normally like Tim Burton movies, I get his dark humor and viewpoints. And Johnny Depp has always been a pleasure to watch in action. This movie however was horrid. The storyline was muddled, Johnny is a caricature of his Capt Jack Sparrow character, Chloe Moretz can't stop pushing her huge top lip out the entire time and does little "acting". The only saving grace to the movie is Michelle Pfieffer. She is still as lovely as always, and played a very strong matriarchal figure in a ho-hum script.

Saw VII The Final Chapter [HD]

A Golden Christmas 2: The Second Tail [Blu-ray]

Better Chemistry than the first
This sequel to "A Golden Christmas" follows the parents, Rod and Katherine, who were preparing to move to Florida in that movie. Well played by the actors from the original (thank goodness--they were the best actors in that one) this story introduces us to their new neighbor Lisa, her ex-boyfriend David, and his new girlfriend, along with the neighbor's niece and her friend. You know from the first few minutes where this story is going to go, so don't expect any dramatic twists in the plot. But to me the chemistry between Lisa and David is so much more believable than it was in the original movie's love interests. The dogs are a little more involved in the action, too, but it still isn't the kid's movie the cover photo may lead you to believe it is. Ron and Katharine befriend their neighbor who would otherwise be spending Christmas alone, and they quickly see she isn't over her ex. They do all they can to facilitate a reconciliation, but their dog seems to have more influential, if...

The Golden Retriever Strikes Again
In this sequel to Golden Christmas, the older parents, Rod and Katherine Wright, have retired to Florida after selling their old homestead in the west. Their Golden Retriever is with them and up to mischief again; matchmaking mischief that is.

The story follows the life of Lisa, a young woman who lives below them and just happens to have three Golden Retriever puppies (who I might add are scene stealers). The Wrights Golden Retriever seems to arrange an introduction to Lisa who develops a friendship with Katherine and eventually tells her of her friendship with David, a young man on the verge of marrying someone else.

Again the Golden Retrievers, all four of them seem to be in cahoots to see that all of the complications are resolved and the story ends happily for Lisa and her friend David.

I personally didn't like this one quite as much as the first movie but it too was pleasant and enjoyable.

Uplifting Christmas Romance
Liked this movie even better than the first "Golden Christmas" because the two lead characters (played by Julie Gonzalo and K. C. Clyde) really look like they have genuine feelings for each other on screen. This is a wholesome Christmas story that is romantic, and entertaining on multi-generational levels. There is the young ex-couple (Clyde and Gonzalo) wondering why they didn't follow through with their instincts to marry when they were dating previously. There is the older couple (played by veterans Alley Mills and Bruce Davison, who were in the prequel), that befriends the younger couple and gives them wise advice from the perspective of their own happy 40-year marriage. And there is the beginning of another relationship between the two youngest characters (played by Gattlin Griffith and Alex Peters). Will Clyde rush into a marriage to the wrong woman (played by Kelly Stables) for the sake of being married? The golden retrievers play a supporting role throughout the story,...

Dinocroc vs. Supergator [HD]

A Horrendously Awful Creature Showdown That Earns My Admiration (And Delight) For The Most Ludicrous Screenplay Of The Year
Who doesn't love genetically engineered animal hybrids? I love them, clearly the SyFy network does, and Roger Corman as well. B-movie genius Corman does take a production credit on the epic SyFy presentation "Dinocroc vs Supergator" and even contributes an inspired audio commentary for the DVD and Blu-Ray release. Unless you lack creative reasoning, I probably don't have to tell you what this movie is promoting. But the visual realization of these nightmarish entities is only a small selling point of this effective bit of bad movie mayhem. For my money, to make a classic bad movie legend--you need several important components: First, a wacky killing machine or two. Second, a maniacally deranged, but logically challenged, plot. And third, a cast giving you overwrought dialogue as if the fate of the world depended on it. Thus, using my completely arbitrary personal criteria, "Dinocroc vs Supergator" is a solid entry into the bad movie lexicon that misses being a highpoint in the...

Fantastic Movie
This movie is fantastic. It is a total throwback to all the old SciFi monster movies. I am actually surprised they didn't use stage prop monsters.

Seriously though, this movie is all about having a good time. Don't expect a deep plot, profound lesson, or complex characters. Do expect monsters, cheesy special effects, and of course girls in bikinis (oh... and a girl with an comically large gun with infinate ammo).

This movie is pure AWESOMENESS!

I can't wait to get this on blu-ray.

BIG FREAKIN' MUSHROOMS
Two giant croc-type animals escape from an experimental lab in Hawaii and nearly kill everyone one. David Carradine is the owner of the lab and wants to keep everything quiet. He brings in a military team to kill the crocs, only to discover fake TV bullets don't kill giant fake crocs. The team is killed, do next Carradine calls in "The Cajun" an American version of Crocodile Dundee, down to the hat. As the body count increases, so do suspicions. People who successfully escape one croc at one water hole always wind up at the place where the other croc is located.

In addition to men in uniforms, the crocs also feed off of girls in bikinis. Our Cajun hunter teams up with the local authorities to hunt down the crocs, the same people Carradine wants to hide everything from. If the crocs don't kill you, Carradine's men (or woman) will. The final scene was so bad it might as well have been clay-mation.

No f-bombs, sex, or nudity. Fake looking creatures, CG muzzle...

Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron

INCREDIBLE MOVIE!!!!
I took my 4 year old, and four 7 year olds to see this movie, and it made an impact on all of us. This movie is original. It is not Disney-ish and while I've appreciation for Disney, this movie did not have the "cutesy" factor of a Disney movie. Spirit captured my children's hearts and imaginations. This movie took the children through a full spectrum of emotions. They were elated at Spirit's courage, angry about his treatment, sad when he was sad and Rain was injured, and again thrilled when he was finally free! Isn't this what movies are for...to entertain our emotions? This movie beautifully depicted strength and courage. The animation was phenomenal and the music...Bryan Adams, what more can I say!!! My four year old was deeply impacted by this movie. She says it changed her life. When she went to get shots, she told me, "I will not cry, I will be brave like Spirit" and she didn't shed a tear! I highly recommend this beautiful and unique movie to anyone who wants to see or have...

Wonderful and uplifting family film...
I went to see this film in sneak preview with my 8 year old cousin.

I thought that it was incredible! It's the story of a wild stallion who's captured, first by US soldiers, and then by a young Native American... All through out though, Spirit's heart is with his herd, running the hills of the untamed west!

Since the horses didn't speak in the film, except for narration by Matt Damon as the voice of Spirit, the horses facial expressions became central, so they had some really fun to watch "conversations". This movie had one of the most touching mother/son relationships since Bambi, in my book, even without a word spoken between them!

It's a movie about being you are, and about never accepting defeat, and about soaring on wings of eagles... We can all stand to have a little of that untamed majesty beating in our hearts every now and then, so go see it, and let your self be taken away!

Marie

Unique and Breathtaking
After watching this movie, I have got to say that this is truly a unique theatrical experience. This is one of the many movies I have been wanting to see for a very long time, and I wasn't dissapointed. The presentation of Spirit is something to hold on to. The Brilliant Score of Hans Zimmer, the Exceptional Songs of Bryan Adams and the Superb Narration from Matt Damon is very Dazzaling. I can't say nothing bad about this movie because there really isn't anything to say.

For a 15 year old guy, like me, I was very Satisfied to see that Dreamworks also thought of the Adults, with the story being strong, as it is, but also giving us the normal humor that we expect from a kids film.

From the Opening Scene to the Final Jump, Spirit is a film that Everyone should go out and see, because it will bring people closer together. For sure Spirit will be getting an Award for the Excellent work that each individual did on this movie. I can't wait to get this on DVD!

Children Of The Corn V: Fields Of Terror

The last watchable entry
"Carrie" is probably the best example, followed by "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Dead Zone." These are wonderful, magical films that...

boring...
This is probobly the 2nd to worst out of the whole 7 movies. It just aint creepy or wierd enough like "COTC 1" and "COTC 4" They have an adult co-leader and child leader that is about 12 or 13. All the rest of the kids are anywhere between 15-17 years old. This movie didnt show any of thier cult meetings and there was just too much gore in this film, which really was boring cause it was the same kids that killed. If you want to see a decent COTC movie with the kids and the gore, you need to get either "COTC 2" or "COTC 4" They have more of the little kids in it killing or doing thier cult stuff. But this movie was just not needed for the series.

Parental Rule #1: Avoid CornFields
Back to the cornfields with He Who Walks Behind the Rows for another installment of guess with adult's in trouble now. That's right, here's yet another installation in the saga of He Who Preys Upon the Young, this time showcasing the plights of a few rather unfortunate young adults as they wander into the stalking fields. It begins as two cars toting six unwary occupants near a small town where their friend, a victim of an "accidental bungee cord jumping" demise, wanted his ashes to be spread. As these city-dwellers move closer and closer to the prize, however, they blunder into the hands of some rather unfriendly youths looking for some time, and folks they don't seem to appreciate, to kill.

Its strange to say that, in watch the Children of the Corn sequels, I've found very few things captivating and yet I still harrowingly press onward. I'm not certain why that is or what the call the cornfield actually has on a soul, but I know that many of these movies, such as this one, are in...

Austin Powers in Goldmember

YEAH, BABY...
My twenty years old daughter and her boyfriend invited me to the movies with them to see the latest Austin Powers film. I went, somewhat reluctantly, as it is not the film I would have chosen, even though I had previously seen the two other Austin Powers films and enjoyed them. Well, am I ever glad that I did! It was, without a doubt, the funniest Austin Powers film to date.

From the great opening scene to the surprise ending, replete with cameos by Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, Danny Devito, the Ozzie Osbourne Family, Steven Spielberg, Britney Spears, Burt Bacharach, Quincy Jones, Nathan Lane, Katie Couric, and John Travolta, the film is a laugh riot. Austin Powers (Mike Myers) still has his mojo amd, together with his gorgeous female sidekick de jour, Foxxy Cleopatra (Beyonce Knowles), sets out to rescue his father, Nigel (Michael Caine), from the evil clutches of the notorious Dutchman, Goldmember (Mike Meyers). To do so, they must go back in time to 1975, the era...

More than meets the eye....
There's much more to this movie than might be seen by your average reviewer. Yes, it repeats itself. Yes, it uses obvious gags. But, such is the spirit and style of the Austin Powers series. Myers may reuse jokes, or use obvious gags.... but the point here is that he does them WELL. He isn't repeating material from the first two movies because he's lazy. Anyone who knows him will tell you very quickly that he'd never let that happen... he is doing is because its funny. The opening is an obvious preparation for such total absurdity (and even a mockery of its own popularity) and all references to earlier movies are done with such self-consciousness that he obviously wants us to think about the previous films. He isn't trying to make it seem new.

Its barely a shallow movie, either. If anyone knows the background to the Austin Powers series, you've probably heard about Mike's amazing devotion to his father, Eric. (note the name of the production company.... Eric's Boy) And,...

I Love Goolllldddd(member)!
YEAH BABY!!!! Austin Powers is back, and as funny as ever. This movie features non-stop laughs that will have you rolling on the floor. I swear, what they said is right about how it has more laughs in one minute than some whole films (Zoolander!). Okay, I'll admit that the story is pretty nonexistant (there is some nonsense about a satellite and a meteor), but we don't go to Austin Powers movies for the plot, we go for the jokes, and this one has some killers. I especially enjoyed the opening credits scene with all the celebrity cameos. Dr. Evil (my hero) is funnier than ever, though its Mini-Me who really steals the show. Fat Bastard, while crude and gross, has his share of laughs. But we can't forget Austin himself, now with his father Nigel. Go see this movie if you want to laugh without having to use your brain for an hour and a half. You'll love it.

Judge Dredd

"I am the Law!"
The career of a Hollywood Star goes through various ups and downs. This excellent film came out at a point in Stallone's career when it was simply his turn to get reviewed harshly by the Hollywood community. He was getting older, his career had drifted considerably, and another Sly action picture was simply going to be a very hard sell. It took a much-underserved whipping when it was released.

As I say, that is a real shame, because Judge Dredd was one of the best comic book adaptations to ever make the cross into film. It perfectly captures the 70's/80's British comic book about a futuristic cop who reins supreme, given the power to arrest, judge, and execute wrongdoers in a world gone rampant with crime.

This was a big budget production, and the sets and special effects are magnificent. The story is extremely engaging, and it is packed with great action. The film really doesn't take a misstep throughout.

What makes the film a real treat are the supporting performances...

Underrated action...
I went to see this movie when it first came out, and I have to say that I never understood why so many people hated it.

All I can think of that that they misread Stallone's portrayal of Judge Dredd. Stallone is purposely playing Dredd as a comic book character (which, after all, is what Dredd was), and therefore not a role laced with any deep meanings. Although there are some deeper scenes (Dredd speaking of what happened to his best friend, and later, Dredd and Rico meeting in the Janus complex), for the most part, the movie is just one big comic book. The movie is what it is, and what it was intended to be; a fun, action sci-fi comic. To expect anything else is unfair.

There are some good roles here, too. Stallone purposely goes two-dimensional as Dredd, which is perfect (Dredd sees only black and white when it comes to the Law). Rob Schnider was also pretty good, not too annoying, not invisible. I recall my friends and I were impressed with him in this one. Diane Lane is...

love the film but....
I love this film, i understand most didn't like it but for what it was it was really well made. my only gripe with the blu-ray is it's still the theatrical cut! being a cinephile i do lots of research on movies i love and have read in several magazines, the fangoria that features the film mentions a harder director's cut and even has great pictures from the film that are not in the final print. with the new film Dredd coming soon it looks like this would have been a great time to to the director's cut and add back all the extra violence to the film and give us some extras. i've seen pictures where dredd's brother rico is in the lab and those cool skinless clones bust free from the chambers and attack dredd, i really would love to see those scenes, the clones were very cool and creepy looking and bet it makes a great fight/ attack scene. maybe one day fingers crossed the studios will listen to the fans and give us what we want and not just upgrade the picture and sound and give us the...

Character descriptions too short
The character descriptions were very short. They averaged about 25 minutes each. Most of the information was not new. It was like ready a freshman history book. I felt the information on Jesus was totally wrong.

didn't order season
I didn't order the season, just the one episode and already wrote a review for it. I had better not be charged for more than that one episode! Thank you - GKing

Truly fascinating!
It's history told from a different angle. It's the facts you do know and some that you never knew. It is amazingly well done and leaves you wanting more episodes.

I love this show
I missed this show when it aired because I was at my Grandmother which does not get the channel, so I ordered it. I loved this show, but will try not to miss another one because I do not want to have too order it.

On Being Imperfect
This is my first time seeing this series, so these are just thoughts from a "virgin." The episode covers two women: one who is having her second child with a married man and another who is living in her mother's house with a husband and a child already.

This show reminds me that nobody is perfect. However, I also couldn't walk in these women's shoes completely because I think they made such huge mistakes. This show has high productions values, but there are many ways in which these two are no different than the mad hatters you see on "Jerry Springer" or "Maury Povich."

The woman getting busy with the married man was pretty, articulate, and had a good job. Don't tell me she can't find a suitable single guy in NYC! Why would you hold a philandering husband in high esteem? If he plays his wife, then why do you think he'd be faithful to you if he weren't married? She said he left her as soon as he learned she was pregnant and yet she still said she loved him...

Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows [HD]

A Scary DVD Classic
I really enjoyed this movie even though most people did not. Its very eerie and is a totally different type of scary than the original. Its about five people who are obsessed with The Blair Witch Project movie who decide to spend the night in the woods where the movie and legends took place. They also decide to film what they see and plan to stay up all night, but they mysteriously fall asleep and their footage is missing the next morning. When they finally find the film, they realize they weren't asleep all night and they weren't alone. This was alot scarier to me than the original which is a horror movie classic. Instead of hearing mysterious noises and finding sticks on the ground however, these characters are seeing things - not knowing if what they are seeing is real or if they are going crazy. Strange markings appear on their bodies, they see dead children haunting the neighborhood and the Blair Witch turns the five characters against eachother making them look guilty of things...

AFTER ALL THE HYPE HAS WORN AWAY...
"Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2" may very well be the most maligned sequel of all time. I have read more positive reviews for "Airplane 2: The Sequel." I have heard more compliments handed out to "Friday the 13th Part 2." There have been far more words of praise lavished like so much lumpy sausage gravy over "The Matrix Reloaded." What gives?

Actually, I think the answer lies in the very hype surrounding the first "Blair Witch" which this film so succesfully spoofs. I mean, think about it. You start out with an unexpected cultural phenomenon on the level of "Star Wars." You wait barely a year before issuing a sequel (not nearly enough time for memories of the first film to become hazy, but plenty of time for the inevitable backlash against it to firmly take root in the popular psyche). Then you have the audacity to release a film that not only pokes fun at the very people who are most likely to rush right out and buy a ticket for the opening night showing, but you make the...

Good idea but Poor execution
When I first heard about about a Blair Witch sequel, I thought why? Here was this little indy movie, that made a ton of cash, was the water-cooler talk for the better part of a year, and was a truly unique film. Why try to top, or equal that? Of course, Hollywood saw a possible cash cow and a big studio jumped in and tainted the Blair Witch name. Now, I have to give the sequel credit in that it didn't just throw another group of kids into the woods and rehash the story from part one. The idea of Book of Shadows is actually a neat idea, but the execution of that idea was horrible. First of all, we are presented with such an annoying group of people to follow in Book of Shadows, I am immediately ready for the killing to begin. Seriously, I was praying Jason would come stumbling out of the woods with his hockey mask and machete to hasten the demise of this cast of characters that no one could relate to. The special effects get ramped up right along with the volume of the soundtrack, and...

Incredibly Fun AND Informative
Smithsonian Channel's SciQ series is now available on DVD for convenient replays whenever desired. This entertaining and incredibly informative science show explores a wide variety of topics for hands-on exploration. Teenage hosts Andrew, Paula, and Pemma tackle a general topic and dig in on-site to bring to light processes, facts, and inventions that are new and exciting for both children and parents.

Andrew and Paula approach each topic from a competitive perspective. Filled with rivalry, each seeks to out-do the other. Paula is the "smart girl" whereas Andrew takes on the "goofy guy" role with relish. The acting is a bit cheesy, and reminds me of teen-hosted TV from my own childhood, but glimpses of authentic exuberance and the joy of discovery break through from time to time.

My six-year-old thinks Andrew's goofball antics are hilarious - he's the hands-down favorite around here. Paula is a bubbly, keener type - while Andrew is wandering around cracking...

Favorite Fun Science Show!
Favorite show of my 3 year old, she loves underwater and robots! Watch out, kids also like the "P" one!

Highly recommended
SciQ is a DVD series for young people that makes learning about science and technology fun. Each is packed with episodes in which teen hosts Paula, Andrew, and Pemma turn learning into an exciting adventure. Volume 1 (105 min.) has the episodes "CSI" (where the trio learn about crime scene investigations as they try to catch bad guys), "Spies" (where Andrew learns that there's more to being a spy than TV would have one believe), "Movie Magic" (where the three learn about the science behind seemingly magical special effects) and "Sound" (where the Blue Man Group teach the hosts about voice and singing). A top pick as a curriculum supplement, addition to public library children's DVD shelves, gift for inquisitive young minds, or simply as a tool to show young people and teens that learning can be fun. Highly recommended.

Perfect Creature

What does it mean to serve?
What does it mean to serve? This is the moral quandry that faces the vampires of the Brotherhood, a race of genetically-engineered beings whose moral duty it is to protect their fellow sentients - mankind.

This fascinating reworking of the vampire legend is set on an Earth similar to our own, but with some notable differences. The most important, of course, is the existence of bloodsuckers, who were created by primitive science and breeding projects sometime in the early 18th century. At first, these new creatures were hunted by mankind, burned at the stake and slaughtered. However, they eventually merged somehow with the Catholic (or possibly Anglican) Church, to create a new religion, one with a main tenet espousing vampires as God's servants to mankind.

The background of this alternate Earth is a little hazy, and that's the reason why I subtracted a star (I would've liked to know more about this world), but that doesn't detract from the story, which is a...

tantalizing plot but not quite complete
The plot is potentially tantalizing and fascinating. It's a vampire movie with more than a simple twist, it is a 180 turn, the vampires serve humanity (no not on a platter, but as the scientists and religious leaders). The whole movie feels like you are trying to catch up, having entered into the story half way through and having missed lots of important facts and details. This is not a real bother, just takes some time to put things together, the big problem is that the movie also feels like it stops a chapter short of a satisfying ending. The movie revolves around the nature of the brotherhood and the nature of the individual vampires, an individual versus collective motif. The question from the two brothers viewpoints is "is this who i really am?", either the one brother who conforms entirely to the collective's wishes or the other brother who goes rogue and kills.

It is a potentially neat and interesting theme. Even to look carefully at a piece of it would make for a...

I want to see more!
The look and the feel of "Perfect Creature" was refreshing. It is seldom that I see a movie, these days, that can make me feel the characters emotions and draws me into the story so thoroughly. I certainly would like to see more of Dougray Scott (yummy) to quote someone else. When will a sequel be made?
